Overview

Rakeedhoo

Rakeedhoo is the southernmost inhabited island in the Vaavu Atoll, situated at the mouth of the channel that bears its name. With around seventy residents and dimensions of 370 by 275 meters, it can be crossed in five minutes, and the tourist accommodations can be counted on one hand.

The reason to visit lies underwater. The reef surrounding the island is one of the best-preserved we have surveyed, and the adjacent channel funnels ocean water—along with all the marine life it carries—into the atoll; this is the very current that made Vaavu famous for diving. There is a catch, however: the distance. The reef begins 140 meters from the shore, so you have to swim a fair bit to reach it.

Above the water, on the other hand, there is hardly any activity. There are three places to eat, one café, no dive centers, no water sports—just profound peace.

    1 h 30 min · In the other direction, from Rakeedhoo to Malé, departures are at 6:45, 9:50 and 15:45. On Fridays times shift by about an hour. The price is estimated from the other Vaavu islands at comparable duration (Felidhoo and Keyodhoo, 70 USD): confirm with your guesthouse.
